Aloo Keema is a Pakistani dish which consists of ground meat, and potatoes, that is cooked in a variety of spices and then simmered in a tomato sauce. You can substitute the potatoes with peas or even add the peas in addition to the potatoes! This recipe is so easy to make and is so flavourful! Aloo Keema can either be served with naan or with boiled rice – it’s up to personal preference.

Ingredients

  • 1 package (454 g) of Fontaine Family lean ground veal
  • 7.5 ml (1/2 Tbsp.) mashed garlic
  • 7.5 ml (1/2 Tbsp.) mashed ginger
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 black cardamoms
  • 2 green cardamoms
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 chopped onion
  • Red chili powder to taste
  • Red chili flakes to taste
  • Salt to Taste
  • 15 ml (1 Tbsp.) ground coriander
  • 15 ml (1 Tbsp.) dried cumin
  • 7.5 ml (½ Tbsp.) turmeric
  • 3 chopped tomatoes
  • 3 cubed potatoes
  • 2 green chilis
  • 30 ml (2 Tbsp.) fenugreek leaves
  • Handful of coriander to garnish

Preparation

  1. Heat oil in a pot and then add bay leaf, cinnamon stick, black cardamom, green cardamom, cloves, and onion. Once it turns slightly golden brown, add the mashed garlic and ginger and continue cooking for 3-4 minutes, until the onions turn golden brown in colour.
  2. Add in ground veal and cook this for 4-5 minutes, until it changes in colour.
  3. Add red chili powder, red chili flakes, salt, ground coriander, dried cumin, turmeric, chopped tomatoes, and ¼ cup of water. Cover and cook on low heat for 15 minutes.
  4. After 15 minutes, remove the larger spices (such as bay leaf, cardamom etc.).
  5. Add the cubed potatoes, green chilies, and enough water to cover the potatoes and mix. Cook until the potatoes are soft, and the water has evaporated to your liking.
  6. Garnish with fenugreek leaves, and coriander (optional).

Tips and Tricks

Leftovers can be used the next day to make an Aloo Keema Sandwich! Simply heat the pan on medium heat and warm up two pieces of bread. Scoop in 1-2 spoon of the Aloo Keema mixture on one of the bread pieces (you may need to crush down the potatoes) and sprinkle some cheese on top. Add the other piece of bread and cook this as you would normally make a grilled cheese sandwich.
