  • 454 g (1 lb) Fontaine Family lean ground beef
  • 15 ml (1 tbsp) lemon juice
  • 3 garlic cloves minced
  • 60 ml (1/4 cup) packed brown sugar
  • 60 ml (1/4 cup) reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 10 ml (2 tsp) sesame oil
  • 2.5 ml (1/2 tsp) ground ginger
  • 2.5 ml (1/2 tsp) crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2.5 ml (1/2 tsp) pepper
  • 500 ml (2 cups) hot cooked white or brown rice


  • sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds for garnish


  1. In a large skillet cook the ground beef, lemon juice and garlic breaking the meat it into crumbles over medium heat until no longer pink.
  2. In a small bowl whisk brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, red pepper flakes and pepper. Pour over the ground beef and let simmer for another minute or two.
  3. Serve over hot rice and garnish with green onions and sesame seeds.
  4. To toast sesame seeds, place seeds in a dry skillet (without oil) over medium heat. Heat, shake the pan and stir often with a wooden spoon until the seeds are golden brown, about 3 minutes. Be sure to stay close to the pan as the seeds can easily burn! Remove from heat immediately and transfer to a plate to stop cooking.
